12/10/2017 0 Comments week 12 - SnowToni ~
This week since it snowed I was afraid that the garden might not withstand the cold temperatures. To my surprise they did well in the cold. Some of our plants were a little droopy but most looked good. Cassidy and I should be able to have a good harvest for our final presentation. We were able to keep most of our plants thriving with the exception of a few eaten by animals. The lettuce will not be ready to harvest by our presentation but everything else should be ready to go. Cassidy ~ For our presentation we plan to bring in some of our harvested plants. Some of our broccoli and brussels sprouts should be ready to bring in. We have been asked if we will give out our harvested vegetables but Toni and I are still discussing what we will do if we bring in vegetables. We plan to show pictures of the growth from week 1 to week 12 and our obstacles during the past 12 weeks.

12/3/2017 0 Comments Week 11 - getting ready to harvestToni ~
This week we are preparing to harvest our Brussel Sprouts and hopefully our Broccoli as well. Our Cauliflower and Kale will be harvested later on after Genius Hour. My mom has been talking to me about how to harvest our plants for next week. Though we wont be able to bring in all of our vegetables for our final presentation I am still very excited for the growth that Cassidy and I have seen over the past few weeks. Cassidy~ This weekend we researched how our plants should look when they are ready to harvest and how to properly harvest them. We will be ready to harvest some plants, although unfortunately not all by the end of our genius hour project. We will be able to bring some in to show everyone our progress, overall I’m proud of our garden and I’m surprised I actually grew something but I had Toni’s help. I can’t wait to harvest our plants and see how they turn out next week! 11/26/2017 0 Comments Week 10 - sick weekToni ~
This week Cassidy and I was not able to make it to the garden but out sister checked up on them. Next week when we visit we plan to harvest our Broccoli and Brussel Sprouts next week and start getting ready for our final project. We are afraid our other plants will not be ready in time but we still plan to care for them after genius hour. Cassidy~ This week unfortunately I was sick and could not go to our meeting. We had Toni’s sister check on the plants for us since Toni did not want to go without me being there to help. I’m still a little sick but hopefully I will be able to go next week, I am pretty certain that I will be able to. I had been losing my voice a bit over Thanksgiving and then began to just feel worse. We planned to meet Sunday as we were all busy the other days but then I slept in and felt horrible so decided to tell Toni and she understood. Next week we will be trying to harvest, hopefully they are ready. 11/19/2017 0 Comments week 9 - bby Brussel SproutToni~
The majority of out plants are growing very well and Cassidy and I are hoping that by the end of genius hour we will have at least our Broccoli and Brussel Sprouts ready to harvest. We can already see the precious Brussel Sprouts forming and the Broccoli is not far behind it. Our Cauliflower is also doing very well and should be ready by week 12. We plan to display at least one of each of our harvested vegetables as our final presentation. I have also had students in the class ask for some of out vegetables so we may even give some out. Our Romaine Lettuce and Kale will not be ready to harvest in time but everything else has done very well. Cassidy~ I was late to our meeting once again on Saturday, only by a little bit but still always late. Toni and I did the usual sequence of events we have been doing for the past couple of weeks. Since we are now not planting anything new all the plants just get weekly checkups. All of our plants are looking very good but not the romaine lettuce as some animal keeps coming and eating it, we could plan to build some sort of barrier around it or maybe set a trap for the animal so we could save our romaine lettuce. Everything else is looking good though and we began to clear out some more weeds again as they grow back extremely quickly. The soil has gotten better so for now at least it is easier to dig up the weeds. The tools Toni’s mother provides us are very helpful as well such as gloves, a shovel, a trowel and a hoe. We will be continuing this process until eventually (before the final project) we get to harvest all of our plants. 11/12/2017 0 Comments Week 8 - (almost) ready for plucking Toni~
This week all we needed was to check up on our plants to see how everything is doing. Out romaine lettuce is still growing slowly since it keeps getting eaten but everything else is thriving even though the weather is getting colder. I hope out garden will continue to be unaffected by the weather. We have only a few weeks left and our Broccoli and Brussel Sprouts should be ready to harvest soon. Cassidy~ This week Toni and I used our time to check on all our plants and the soil of our garden. The past week has been raining a lot which is very good for our plants and will add more nutrients to the soil and will make it more rich. From now on we plan to keep watch on our plants and tend to the weeds that get too close or grow too much. The first plants we will harvest will be our broccoli, after the broccoli the other plants should be close behind excluding our romaine lettuce. We can see the brussel sprouts beginning to ball up and our plants are getting taller, we should be expecting some actual food soon. 11/5/2017 0 Comments week 7 - weedingToni~
This week we visited our garden to finish weeding and check up on our plants. The dirt was very wet which made it a lot easier for us to dig up weeds. Since we dug weeds last week, we didn't need to spend as much time on it this week. We pulled up what we needed to around our plants. Our lettuce keeps getting eaten by animals but many are still trying to grow. We don't think our lettuce will be ready to harvest by the end of this 12 weeks. Cassidy~ Our plants are doing very well except for our lettuce. Almost all our lettuce has been eaten unfortunately. Our broccoli that was eaten has officially came out of the ground and is completely dead. The other broccoli plants are doing well though and should be ready very soon. All our plants are getting to be very big. Our Brussels sprouts are starting to ball up and it rained a bit today so the soil was nice and soft. The rain made it easier to break up the soil and get all the weeds. Hopefully we will be harvesting soon! 10/29/2017 1 Comment Week 6 - pretty plantsToni~
This week we pulled a few weeds but many were hard to get out and we were not able to get all of them. It was also wet and soggy and made it harder for us to pull out weeds so we had to stop. A few are really deep in the dirt and we were forced to use a shovel and dig some of them out. We got the biggest ones this week but there are still little ones around out plants we need to get. We got as many as we could and will continue to pull the rest out that are near and around our plants. Cassidy~ This week as we observed our plant growth we estimate that some of our plants, such as the broccoli, may be ready to harvest. Some are not ready at all considering an animal ate them. The fact that now one of our broccoli plants and one of our romaine lettuce plants are gone is a set back but we still have others so we will be fine. We will continue to tend to our garden such as weeding and water and checking on them but for now no major things will be happening. In about two weeks or so we may be able to actual get some of our plants. Our priority next week will be getting all of the weeds. 10/22/2017 3 Comments week 5- Big boyToni~ This week we planted two Kale plants. It was more difficult to dig up the dirt because the top of the soil was dry but the lower part was wet and made it difficult to dig up the dirt. Another issue we had was weeds. We pulled the big ones around the plants and a dug up a huge one about a foot deep we named "Big Boy". It took us awhile to dig it up and even then, we didn't get it all the way out and we were very tired. While we were gone an animal ate one of our romaine lettuce plants but it we think it will still continue to grow. Cassidy~ We were both able to come this week and although I was a bit late it did not affect our progress. Toni’s Mom, our mentor, says that one of our broccoli plants should be ready fairly soon. The other plants are looking good as well except a deer or bunny came and ate some of our romaine lettuce and unfortunately a whole broccoli plant. We used a shovel to get some weeds here and there as they have started to become abundant in our garden. Next week we plan to get all of the weeds out of our garden. 10/15/2017 0 Comments Week 4- PlanningToni~
This week we did not plant anything. Both Cassidy and I decided against Lemon Balm since it is not a vegetable. We also decided not to plant pumpkins since you usually plant those much earlier. Instead we will plant something that we could give to someone and would be more of use. Next week we will begin planting again and check on the progress of our garden. Cassidy~ Me and Toni were both unable to meet up this weekend so we decided to use this as our break/planning week. We texted our new game plan to how we want this garden to turn out and what we plan on doing. We decided on certain things and I feel like we now have a better understanding than we did and it should go smoother from now on. Next week we will visit our garden and check up on things, also planting a few more things. 10/8/2017 0 Comments week 3- our progressToni~ Our plants have been growing very well. Almost everyone of them look very great. The recent weather has been very good for our garden. The rain combined with the nutrient rich soil has had great affect on the growth of our plants. The soil is able lock in moisture well and has been very good for our plants. There is only one that doesn't look very well but it is not completely gone yet, there is still a chance it will make a comeback since it is not completely dead. Cassidy~ This week we were sadly unable to plant the pumpkin we wanted to plant because of weather issues. Toni’s sister assisted us in helping to check on our plants and they’re doing well. They’ll be well watered with all the rain we are getting. We also plan to plant some lemon balm next week if we can. Next week we will be planting both the pumpkin and the lemon balm. It may not work out but it’s worth a shot. Hopefully next week the weather won’t be as bad and we can go out and work on our garden and plant the lemon balm and pumpkin. I think it will be interesting to see how the pumpkin goes. We’ll just have to see. |
