Our 12 week garden journey
Toni ~
During this fall semester my friend Cassidy and I will be growing a garden during the colder months for our genius hour project. Genius Hour is a scheduled time for students to explore their own passions, be creative, and learn unique skills. This could be anything from learning a new instrument to doing service projects. Each week students write a reflection on how your project has progressed and and at the end of twelve weeks everyone presents their project to the class. Everyone will also have time each week during class to work on their project.
We will be growing a garden over the next twelve weeks. Plants usually grow faster than twelve weeks but we will be planting a new vegetable each week and when one type of vegetable is ready to harvest, there will be other things growing as well which will lengthen our harvest time. We will be growing Brussel Sprouts, Lettuce, and Carrots. This is subject to change but this is what I have found grows well in the colder months. If we find our garden is not growing well out in the open, we will get the needed materials to MAKE our own greenhouse. I have wanted to grow a garden for a while and though it is unusual to have a garden in cold months I believe it could be a success.
Cassidy~
The biggest struggle of our project will be the fact that these crops will be grown in the colder months. Most crops tend to grow better in warmer climates because of the heat sun emits. There are a select few plants that do grow well in the winter though so hopefully we won't have a problem with that. If it does become a problem we have planned to build a small greenhouse. Another problem that could occur is time management and location. We want to find a spot to plant in between our houses so one of us doesn't have to drive so far. We are looking into it and will hopefully find a promising location with good soil. We'll meet about once a week and make sure to plan ahead for weekends for about 1-2 hours. We are both inexperienced gardeners and it will be a struggle getting through this. With the help of our mentor, Toni's Mom, it should be easier because she's a gardener.
We will learn a lot throughout this entire process. There may be many mistakes but we will learn from them. We have plans and backup plans such as the greenhouse. Every mistake we make we will learn from it and find a solution. We have planned out solutions for certain situations that could go wrong. Such as if the plants aren't growing we could try a greenhouse, different fertilizer, less/more water, etc. We will do research on al of the crops we plan on planting to lessen the chance of failure and expand our knowledge on how to nurture the plant and help it grow. We will make sure to know and keep record of how much water, sunlight, and fertilizer it needs.
